Hello friends, I would like to pendown my experience as Architect in India.
It is not very easy being an Architect in India, the first thing is we have teach our relatives and friends that we are an Architect not Architecture or civil engineer or drawing person and mostly not engineer.
After convincing your relatives about your nature of work, next thing they usually ask is
"kanna we planning to build one house we want you to design it [literral meaning is will you do it for free]"
At first they ask us to do, so that we gain experience, see actual field and ofcourse they are our favourite mama/mami.
But then we become enemies if we dont bend down to thier rules. And most importantly designing as per their taste and choice.
Once i was made to sit between 10 of our relatives each giving us different ideas, directions and opinion and the only thing that came to my mind was.
Even we design it well thanks to them the final product will be entirely different and we will be blamed.
How it changes?
There will be one guy who will know a so called Engineer[Actually he will be Maistry] who has buit his beautiful place. Once he enters the scene the entire system will be changed. And they treat you like a school children, they wont accept your design and they will share something to client and with pressure from that one guy they will go ahead with his plan or they will change our design so much, at the end of the day it will be like what they designed.
It's not entirely true with all of them, there will be someone who listens to you till the foundation day.
There will be another constraint called "Budget"
At college we take inspiration from many things, fruits, scribblings, plants. But in realty we get very little chance to experiment on those. Reason being budget and we fail to impress the clients. Even they want a beautiful, different house for them, but when it goes to "Costing" stage they will decide to pull the plug of many concepts and ideas which we reasearch about a lot. It's not the mistake of the client and we can't blame them. They still beleive that their "Maistry" is a good builder and cost effective person. I have seen cases where he promise the budget wont cross 25lacs, but at the end of the day it would have crossed 35+.
Work stage:
Most of us before starting our own firm will work in an Architect company for "Experience", that's where the fun begins. Well what we learned for 5 years will be entirely different from "Real World". In college days we work on concept, and principle "Form follows Function", but in real world it is actually, "Form follows Budget" oh and maximum FSI and saleable area.
Even though we know what we are doing is wrong, we don't and most importantly we can't express it to our boss. Because the real field is entirely different buddy.
If Architecture is your passion and you want to be a good designer, then India is long way from it. If your parents own a Construction company then you can survive. Rest of them join a Architect company or any other construction company.
Think about these things before taking Architecture and this is not the end, will be adding more things to this blog so keep checking it.
Adios.
